About Vape Free West
What is Vape Free West?
Vape Free West aims to reduce vaping harm among young people from Arabic, Burmese, Hakha Chin and Karen speaking communities in Melbourne’s central and western suburbs. To do this, the campaign focuses on supporting young people aged 12 – 25 years from these communities, as well as their parents and guardians.
Who developed Vape Free West?
Vape Free West brought together organisations and communities to address vaping through culturally informed approaches. The cohealth bi-cultural program played a central role in this work, with key contributions from Vanbawi Thwang, Firdos Saleh and Shadow Toke supporting community engagement and program delivery.
The initiative was shaped by the lived experience and voices of Arabic, Burmese, Hakha Chin and Karen-speaking community members across Melbourne’s west, with youth resources co-designed through a Youth Working Group and parent videos informed by focus groups with parents and guardians.
The Vape Free West Partnership was led by Melton City Council in partnership with Western Public Health Unit, City of Melbourne, cohealth, Western Health, IPC Health, Wyndham City Council, Brimbank City Council and Maribyrnong City Council, and funded by VicHealth.
